New Zealand-based retailer Kathmandu has unveiled its new national distribution center at Portlink in Christchurch, doubling its warehouse capacity to improve efficiency of managing stock in the nation.

The new distribution center gives the outdoor clothing and equipment retailer the potential to ship internationally, reported scoop.nz.

Kathmandu chief executive Peter Halkett said the distribution center was transformational for the company and a step change in its capability.

"As well as increasing our capacity the Centre has allowed us to introduce new technology and work practices to improve efficiency," Halkett added.

The Christchurch center will support the retailer on-going store roll-out program, the expansion of its product range, and its growing online business.

"As a multi-channel offer becomes more important for our customers we want to meet that demand and we now have a large dedicated area which we can scale up as our online sales continue to grow."

As of 31 July 2011, Kathmandu's total store network comprised of 65 in Australia, 39 in New Zealand, and six in the UK.
